History: Distribution

Sightings of the helmeted honeyeater (Lichenostomus melanops cassidix) have never been widespread. Its past distribution was restricted to the tributaries of the Upper Yarra River and Westernport Bay. Confirmed colonies of helmeted honeyeaters have been reported from only two areas: the catchments of the Yellingbo area and the Cardinia Creek watershed of Victoria.

Reported sightings from central and eastern Gippsland probably refer to the Gippsland subspecies of yellow-tufted honeyeater (ssp. gippslandica).
