The Soil: Texture And Structure

The term 'soil texture' describes the size and mix of a soil's constituent particles and determines much of its physical character. Soil particles are classified according to the following sizes

  • > 2 mm gravel
  • 0.2-2 mm coarse sand
  • 0.02 - 0.2 mm fine sand
  • 0.002 - 0.02 mm silt
  • < 0.002 mm clay

Textural classes can then be described according to the various mixtures of particles. Many of the major classes are shown in the accompanying 'texture pyramid'.
