Modeling: Population Size
The sizes of all natural populations vary because of the vagaries of the environment and the chance events that result in births and deaths. Small populations, such as the mountain pygmy possum (shown here) and helmeted honeyeaters, are prone to extinction because often they have restricted spatial distributions and are therefore susceptible to local catastrophes such as fires, extreme weather conditions and endemic disease. The distribution of the mountain pygmy-possum, is limited to the Bogong High Plains and parts of Kosciusko National Park.
