Taxonomy

Classification of the helmeted honeyeater has been a matter of contention for a number of years. It is regarded as a subspecies of the more widely distributed yellow-tufted honeyeater (Lichenostomus melanops). The helmeted honeyeater (Lichenostomus melanops subspecies cassidix) is the largest and most colourful subspecies.
