Rock Platforms: Subtidal Zone
Generally remains submerged except at extreme low tides. It roughly corresponds to the term
'sub-littoral' used in some texts.
Brown algae such as Ecklonia and the bull kelps are common in this zone. They can photosynthesize under the water and their thick fronds can withstand wave damage.
