Heathland: Hakea sericea

Hakea sericea (Bushy Needlewood) grows in heaths and shrublands of southern Australia. It shows two aspects of sclerophylly:

  • rigid leaves that minimise water loss
  • woody fruits.

Woody fruits are characteristic of the family Proteaceae to which this species belongs.

Hakea sericea with flowers and fruit. The flowers of this species are usually white, or sometimes pink, and are scented. They produce a lot of nectar that attracts birds, which in turn promotes cross-pollination.
