Next, seedlings of both populations were again grown on the calcareous soil but the soil in half of the pots containing seedlings from each population was acidified prior to planting, with sufficient sulphuric acid to reduce the soil pH to less than 8. The untreated pots represented the control.

Dry weights of all treatments were again measured at 6 months.
