Modeling: Variability

In the model, without fire protection, there is a constant chance (p = 0.05 per annum) that a fire will occur, but we can't say exactly when, or even if, it will happen.

In the real world, there is unpredictable variation in the environment. Thus carrying capacity and the chances of surviving from one year to the next are unpredictable. In this model carrying capacity and the chances of survival of juveniles and adults include random components. An element of randomness is also included in the fire component of the model.
