Mangroves: Mangroves Examples - Avicennia

White mangrove (Avicennia marina) is the most widespread mangrove in Australia, from the tropics to SW Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. It is shown here growing at the seaward margin. White mangroves have aerial roots (pneumatophores) to improve gas exchange in the waterlogged soils.

Avicennia marina is the most southerly mangrove in Australia. It is found as far south as Bunbury in Western Australia and Wilson's Promontory in the east.
