Mangroves: Mangroves Examples - Rhizophora sp.

Stilt roots are characteristic of Rhizophora. The roots project outwards like buttresses, and function to support the plant in soft substrates.

Aerial roots, such as stilt roots, may also function to increase gas exchange in waterlogged soils (which are anaerobic) by projecting above the substrate into the air.

This photo was taken on Hinchinbrook Island, Noth East Queensland. Here the Rhizophora is growing amongst rocks, but it is common on tidal mudflats.
