The kelp, Macrocystis angustifolia is a brown alga, a type of kelp (Order Laminariales). It grows subtidally at depths of up to 10 metres.

Flexible stipes arise from the holdfast and bear tough, leathery blades with floats (bladders). Individual blades may be 1.2 metres long and the thallus may be as long as 60 metres.
