Heathland: Casuarina
Casuarina and the similar Allocasuarina
grow in habitats ranging from coastal foreshores, where they are often referred to as she-oaks, to the arid inland.
The photosynthetic organs are unusual.

Species in the genus Casuarina were often called desert oaks or she-oaks because the early settlers considered the wood to be similar to European oak. This photo is of bull oak ( Allocasuarina luehmannii ) a species of semi-arid regions.
