Heathland: Banksia - Fruits

Sclerophyllous plants often have woody fruits, including most members of the Proteaceae.

Each flower in the inflorescence produces a woody fruit called a follicle and forms a single complex fruit called a cone.

This banksia was burnt in a wildfire a few days before the photo was taken. The follicles, which protected the seeds from the heat of the fire, have opened, allowing the seeds to fall onto the ground. Notice the seeds all over the ground under the bush in the photograph.
